Title:

Apprentices’ Library

Description:

A bookplate featuring a picture of Aristotle teaching children by a mountainside and river, pointing to the Apprentice’s Library or possibly a steeple at the top of the mountain. The picture has an arm holding a hammer at the top. The artist who made this bookplate is Alexander Anderson. Anderson was born in New York and his parents were from Scotland. He was a doctor and artist. When he was 12, he started practicing engraving on copper products. This was possibly a bookplate for Colonel James Anderson’s Mechanics’ and Apprentice Library with borrowing privileges to Clarkson Brady, but it’s difficult to determine which location this bookplate belonged to; a Library of Congress record indicates it might be the Mechanics’ and Apprentice Library of Boston, however, Alexander Anderson was born in New York, so it could possibly be from the New York library location.
