Holmes Beckwith Follow the Gleam
Description:
A bookplate from the library of Holmes Beckwith (1884-1921) featuring mountains, trees, and a lake. Holmes Beckwith was born in 1884 in Hawaii, with his parents being ministers and missionaries. He was a bookplate collector, political scientist and a finance professor at many different colleges including Dartmouth College, Grinnell College, Northwestern University School of Commerce, Colorado State, Syracuse University. He murdered Dean Wharton of Syracuse University and killed himself on the same day April 2, 1921 because the dean had dismissed him from his position due to student complaints. Sheldon Cheney was born on June 29, 1886 in Berkeley, California. He was an author and art critic. He worked for his father before he relocated to Detroit and started the Theater Arts Magazine in 1916 and was an editor until 1921. His magazine helped advertise “little theater activity, advocated for new stagecraft design and ushered in a new era of playwrights.”
