Title:
Ex Libris Samuel Bradford and Della Hood, Knight
Description:
The manuscript depicts a bookplate that features a home flanked by two trees. That image is then framed by a bookshelf mantelpiece, whereupon the top sits numerous books aside a tea kettle. On the bottom, there are boughs of plants, a knight, a queen, and a book. These are representative of their namesakes, Samuel Bradford Knight and his wife, Della Hood Knight. Samuel Bradford Knight was a “general freight agent” for the “Wabash Railroad Company” (History of the Genesee Country). In this position, Knight would be in charge of overseeing the freight being transported by and for the company. The Knight family was a prominent name in the early Alleghany settlements, with documentation in the current day Scio Township, along Knights Creek, which the family gave their surname to (History of the Genesee Country). Della Knight, maiden name Hood, was the daughter of another early settlers family, William Hood.
Information on the Wabash Railroad Company can be found on the Wabash Railroad Historical Society’s website.
The bookplate was created by William Edgar Fisher, who was born in Wellsville, N.Y. on October 24, 1872. He attended Phillips, Andover Academy, and Cornell University. He was a well known artist, advertiser, and bookplate designer and was a former president of the American Book Plate Society. He became an art editor of Judge magazine during the early 1920s. Additionally, Fisher was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Players of New York City. He died at the age of 84 in 1956.
