Title:

Benjamin H. Brewster

Description:

A bookplate featuring a family crest with the words, “Liberty Above All Things”. The bookplate features a shield with a knighthood on top. There’s also text that says “Verite soyet ma garde.” which is the Brewster family “coat of arms.” Benjamin H. Brewster was born on October 13, 1816 in Salem, New Jersey. In 1846, he was made commissioner by James K. Polk in order to settle accusations by the Cherokee against the United States Government. He served as the Attorney General of the United States under Chester A. Arthur, and served as the attorney general of Pennsylvania under John W. Geary. He was the lead prosecutor in the U.S. Postal Service’s Star Fraud Routes. The Star Routes scandal took place in the 19th century in which postal workers were awarded postal delivery contracts in the south and west. Brewster died April 4, 1888 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
