Ex Libris Eleanor Terbush
Description:
A bookplate featuring a realistic profile of Eleanor Ter Bush. The picture is surrounded by boughs of flowers, has butterflies at the top, and a book at the bottom. It won an award at the Sixth Annual Exhibition of Contemporary Bookplates at the Groiler Club in 1921. This bookplate is from a book called “A Child’s Garden of Verses” by Robert Louis Stevenson. Robert Louis Stevenson was born on November 13, 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was a “novelist, essayist, poet and travel writer.” He’s most well-known for writing Treasure Island, a Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Kidnapped, and a Child’s Garden of Verses. Today, his works are held in general acclaim. In 2018, he was ranked just behind Charles Dickens, as the 26th most translated author in the world.” Bookplate collector and teacher Eleanor S. Terbush was born on April 24, 1874 in Chicago, Illinois. Her mother was Nora Elanore Haines Terbush and her father was Augustine D. Terbush. She had one sister, Sarah A. Terbush. She died on August 9, 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. Bookplate creator William Edgar Fisher was born in Wellsville, N.Y. on October 24, 1872. He attended Phillips, Andover Academy, and Cornell University. He was a well known artist, advertiser, and bookplate designer and was a former president of the American Book Plate Society. He became an art editor of Judge magazine during the early 1920s. Additionally, Fisher was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Players of New York City. He died at the age of 84 in 1956.
