Title:

University of California Gift of Robert Belcher

Description:

A bookplate gift from Robert Belcher. There is a bear standing under an arbor of Spanish tiling roof with grapes hanging and the bear is holding a sign that says “gift of Robert Belcher.” To the left of the bear is a miner’s pick and prospecting pan. This bookplate is perceived as more local than other California bookplates as the tile roof, the bear, and the grapes are all symbols of California. Albertine Randall Wheelan, the bookplate creator, was born on May 27, 1863 in San Francisco. She created bookplate designs that were characterized as Western. Wheelan was an American cartoonist, costume designer, and illustrator. She illustrated children’s books and magazines, and her work was included in the 1893 Chicago’s World Fair. According to an article in The American Magazine of Art, San Francisco’s Chinatown was an inspiration for her art. In 1887, she got married to Fairfax Henry Wheelan, and after his death in 1915, she relocated to New York City.

The date for the manuscript has been ascertained by comparison with the collection of ArtStor’s website.
