Title:
University of California, James K. Moffitt Fund Let there be light!
Description:
A bookplate of the University of California. The bookplate features two angels hovering over a book. The bookplate owner James Kennedy Moffitt was a “regent” of the University of California San Francisco from 1911 to 1948. He helped make San Francisco a main location for the medical school by being on the UC Board of Regents. Albertine Randall Wheelan, the bookplate creator, was born on May 27, 1863 in San Francisco. She created bookplate designs that were characterized as Western. Wheelan was an American cartoonist, costume designer, and illustrator. She illustrated children’s books and magazines, and her work was included in the 1893 Chicago’s World Fair. According to an article in The American Magazine of Art, San Francisco’s Chinatown was an inspiration for her art. In 1887, she got married to Fairfax Henry Wheelan, and after his death in 1915, she relocated to New York City.
The date for the manuscript has been ascertained by comparison with the Pratt Institute's collection available on the ArtStor’s website.
