Title:

Library - University of California Jane K. Sather Library Fund

Description:

A bookplate of the University of California Library. The text surrounds a picture of a tree and a lake, and has a shield at the top with a banner on each side that says “Let there be light!” The bookplate collector Jane K. Sather was born on March 9, 1824 in Brooklyn, New York. She is known for being one of the University of California, Berkeley’s biggest donors. She started the “Sather Professorship of Classical Literature and the Sather Professorship of History at Berkeley. She was a big supporter of women’s suffrage. She married Peter Sather, “a trustee of the University of California” in 1882 after their previous spouses had died. After Peder died, she became responsible for his money. She gave $75,000 to the school and bought a piece of land in Oakland. The President of the University, Benjamin Wheeler inspired her to start the Sather Professorship of Classical Literature, which allows a certain scholar to spend a semester at Berkeley. She also gave $200,000 to build Sather Tower (a.k.a “The Campanile) which is 307 feet tall. She died on December 11, 1911.
