Description:

A bookplate of Bucknell University. It shows the front of a building that says “Vergil-Dante Milton.” Vergil, Dante, and Milton are characters from the poem Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. Dante Alighieri was born in May 1265 in Florence, Italy. He was a “poet, writer, and philosopher.” He’s known for creating the Divine Comedy and it is known for being one of the most influential poems and “the greatest literary work of the Italian language.” The Carnegie Library was built between June 1904 and June 1905 by the New York architectural firm of Ackerman and Peabody, The library was built to accommodate 150,000 volumes and opened for use in September 1905. There are portions of Renaissance Revival style architecture that are identical to the Morgan Library in NYC. At the time of construction, there were 976 students attending Bucknell, 94 were women attending the separately administered Female Institute.
