Title:
Ex Libris Clifford Nickels Carver
Description:
A bookplate depicting a sailing ship from the library of Clifford Nickels Carver. There is a man in a crown and a shield below the ship. Clifford Nickels Carver was the son of Amos D. Carver. He became a part of his dad’s company, which involved the Baker, Carver, and Morrell. Clifford Nickels Carver was a graduate of Princeton University in 1913, and he became secretary from 1914 to 1915 to Walter H. Page, American ambassador to Great Britain, and then served as Secretary to Edward Mandell House, “Colonel House,” who was President Wilson’s personal representative to Europe. Carver was an assistant to Bernard M. Baruch, worked for the War Industries Board, and gained a commission in the U.S. Navy, attached to the Office of Naval Intelligence. He was a renowned collector of bookplates by famous Americans, Europeans, and Princetonians. He authored in 1911 a book titled, Book-Plates of Well-known Americans.
The bookplate was engraved by A.N. Macdonald for Tiffany, after Carver’s own design. The arms are those of the Carver family and the ship represents the interests of the family for many generations.
