Description:

A bookplate from the Art Library of Sheldon Cheney. There is a tree sitting by a lake and some islands. The bookplate creator, Sheldon Cheney (1886-1980), was an American author and art critic in Berkeley California. He was born in 1886 and was the Appointment Secretary at the University of California for over forty years. In his youth, he had a passion for the art of bookmaking and while studying architecture at Berkeley he founded a quarterly journal for designers and collectors of bookplates. He moved to Detroit and founded the Theater Arts Magazine in 1916 and was its editor until 1921. He studied drama at Harvard University in 1913 and wrote and published many books. He died in 1980.
