Title:
C.H. Cheney Ex Libris
Description:
A bookplate featuring a tree on top of a family crest. There is a shield with the text “C.H. Cheney Ex Libris” above and below it. The bookplate is for the brother of the creator, Sheldon Cheney (1886-1980), who was an American author and art critic in Berkeley California. The C.H. Cheney stands for Charles Henry Cheney, who lived from 1884-1943. He was an architect and engineer who became a prominent advocate to proper and prosperous city planning. He later served as a cit planner with numerous California cities, such as Berkely, Santa Barbara, and Alameda. His most famous project was a blueprint for the well-known Fresno Civic Center which prioritized the mercantile industries and built up a dynamic downtown ceneter in Fresno. It was ultimately ignored, but it continues to offer a potential that was innovative of Cheney’s time.
Sheldon Cheney was born in 1886 and was the Appointment Secretary at the University of California for over forty years. In his youth, he had a passion for the art of bookmaking and while studying architecture at Berkeley he founded a quarterly journal for designers and collectors of bookplates. He moved to Detroit and founded the Theater Arts Magazine in 1916 and was its editor until 1921. He studied drama at Harvard University in 1913 and wrote and published many books. He died in 1980.
