Title:

Ex Libris Colonial CLVB of Princeton University

Description:

A bookplate of Princeton University. There is a building in the picture with leaves surrounding the frame. The building is the Colonial Club at Princeton University. There is a star at the bottom that reads “1893” in it. William B. Pell was born on November 6, 1874 in New York City. He went to high school at the Lawrenceville School and graduated from Princeton University in the Class of 1898. He was an Advertising Illustrator and Ship modeler, both ancient and modern. After graduating he was employed in an Architect’s office for some time, and after that worked with the Banking House of Vermilye & Company of New York for six years. In 1904 he moved to Milford, Connecticut, and spent his time farming and illustrating. In 1921 he stopped farming and focused on illustration and ship modeling. His war activities include being in charge of publicity of two of the Liberty Loan Drives in his locality. He was a Secretary to the Examining Physician of the Local Draft Board. He did a good deal of work for Naval Intelligence in his locality. He was second lieutenant of Company C, Fifth Regiment of the Connecticut State Guard. He was an editor of the Princeton Tiger from 1893 to 1894 which might explain why he created this bookplate in 1893.
