Title:
Roland Gideon Curtin, M.D.
Description:
A bookplate with a family crest. On the crest, there is a deer, three clovers, and three crosses. The Crest is surrounded by garland and has a knight helmet and a harp on top of it. Below it, there’s a banner that reads “Books, unlike universities, are open to all who would read.” Bookplate collector, Roland Gideon Curtin was born on October 29, 1839 in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. He earned an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1866 and lived at Philadelphia Hospital. He was an “assistant U.S. Geologist and helped F.V. Hayden to the Rocky Mountain district. In 1869, he came back to Philadelphia to be a doctor. “He held many professional appointments and was associated with the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Howard Hospital, the Lying in Charity, the Maternity Hospital, Philadelphia Hospital, Presbyterian Hospital, and Rush Hospital for Contagious Diseases.” In 1871, he earned his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania. He died from Cardiovascular disease on March 14, 1913. Curtin appears to have been an avid bookplate collector as he wrote a book in 1910 titled, THE BOOK-PLATES OF PHYSICIANS, WITH REMARKS ON THE PHYSICIAN'S LEISURE-HOUR "HOBBIES.
The heraldry was created by Mark Lambert, 1781-1855, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was an engraver of banknotes. He apprenticed under Thomas Bewick, but eventually created his own business in 1807. His son, Mark William Lambert, became a partner in 1838. His bookplates were republished under bookplate expert John Vinycomb’s book, Lambert as an engraver of bookplates, in 1896, which is most likely where Curtin saw the heraldry and repurposed it for his own bookplate and personal library.
