William Darling

Description:

William Darling. No. 250. The bookplate has a decoration around it. The bookplate collector William Darling was born on May 8, 1885 in Carlisle, England. He went to James Gellespie’s School before going to Daniel Stewart’s College and Heriot-Watt College. He was given an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Edinburgh. He was part of the Black Watch in World War I as a private in 1914, before he became a second lieutenant with the Royal Scots a year later in 1915. He was hurt five times during combat. He earned a military cross and was “mentioned in dispatches.” He was a part of the Irish War of Independence for two years where he met Drew Pollard where they printed news articles about the war from Britain’s point of view.
