Title:
“Ex Libris Dr. Joseph DEBIE.” (“so we the bees make honey but not for ourselves”)
Description:
A bookplate depicting a scene of bees and a beehive surrounded by trees and flowers, with the words, “EX LIBRIS Dr Joseph Debie” on the side. In the top left corner there’s an inscription “Sic vos non vobis mellificatis apes” which means “so we the bees make honey but not for our ourselves.” It derives from a verse in Tiberius Claudius Donatus in his "Life of Virgil" (17,70): "Hos ergo versiculos feci, tulit alter honores, Sic vos non vobis nidificatis aves; Sic vos non vobis villera fertis, oves; Sic vos non vobis mellificatis apes; Sic vos non vobis fertis aratra boves." The inscription is written from the bee’s perspective. The bookplate comes from the library of Dr. Joseph Debie.
