Title:
The Ex Libran; John Eastbrook
Description:
A fragment of The Ex Libran, a publication printed to discuss the history and importance of bookplates and their owners, most likely published in 1912. Within the publication, there is a bookplate from bookplate collector John Eastbrook. The plate contains a coat of arms depicting a shield that possesses three flowers, two above a white chevron and one beneath the apex. Above the shield sits a Griffin, a mythical beast that possesses the body of a lion and the head of a bird. While depictions of the Griffin do not always include wings, the Eastbrook plate does. Though the interpretations vary, the most common inclusion of the Griffin was to symbolize protection (Britannica) On either side of the shield, Eastbrook’s plate is framed by two laurel bunches (Journal of the Ex Libris Society). Laurel branches are used most often to symbolize wealth and power through knowledge, recognized by many secondary institutions, and also in heraldry. The text states that Eastbrook’s plate is an early, experimental work by Edwin Davis French, a prominent bookplate engraver of the twentieth century.
