The Elizabeth Jones Memorial Library of the Wilkes-Barre Institute 1921

Description:

A bookplate of the Elizabeth Jones Memorial Library. The bookplate features trees and a path with books and a lamp at the bottom. There is a torch above the image. Gilbert Stuart McClintock was born on December 27, 1886 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. His parents were Andrew Hamilton and Eleanor Welles McClintock. He went to school in Lawrenceville, and went to college in Princeton. He started as a lawyer in Wilkes-Barre in 1912. He was also chairman of the board of trustees at Wilkes and on the Board of Directors at the National Bank of Wilkes-Barre. He was also the vice-chairman of the Glen Alden corporation and was a member of the Board of Public Assistance of Pennsylvania and president of the Wyoming Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America for nine years. He was also a member of the library council and advisory council department of Art and Archeology at Princeton.” Bookplate creator William Edgar Fisher was born in Wellsville, N.Y. on October 24, 1872. He attended Phillips, Andover Academy, and Cornell University. He was a well known artist, advertiser, and bookplate designer and was a former president of the American Book Plate Society. He became an art editor of Judge magazine during the early 1920s. Additionally, Fisher was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Players of New York City. He died at the age of 84 in 1956.
