Ex Libris Theodora N. McCutcheon

Description:

A bookplate depicting the image of a woman standing by a fireplace. There is a chair next to the fireplace and on top there is a shelf with candles and a vase. On the top, there is text that reads “Sub Alis Sto” which translates to “Under wings, I stand.” On the bottom there is text that reads “Sigillum Collegeii Wellesleiani” and “Non ministrari sed ministrare.” which translate to “Seal of Wellesley College” and “Not to be served but to serve, respectively.” Theodora Nye McCutheon was born on March 2, 1882 in New York. Her father was James McCutcheon and her mother was Frances Augustus Nye. She has one brother, Norman L. McCutcheon. She died on March 6, 1917 in Connecticut and was buried at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, Connecticut. Bookplate creator William Edgar Fisher was born in Wellsville, N.Y. on October 24, 1872. He attended Phillips, Andover Academy, and Cornell University. He was a well known artist, advertiser, and bookplate designer and was a former president of the American Book Plate Society. He became an art editor of Judge magazine during the early 1920s. Additionally, Fisher was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Players of New York City. He died at the age of 84 in 1956.
