Description:

A bookplate featuring a father, mother and child in elegant dress. They are surrounded by pillars with trophies and flowers with sky in the background. On the bottom, there are two crests with text that reads “Virtute Acquiritur Monos” and “Esse Et Videri” which translate to “Monos is acquired by virtue” and “To see and be seen” respectively. George Xavier McLanahan was born on July 29, 1872 in New Hamburg, New York. His mother was Helen Spencer Day McLanahan and his father was George William McLanahan. He had one sister, Cornelia Day McLanahan Curtis. He was married to Caroline Sudyam Duer McLanahan. He had two children, Duer McLanahan and George Xavier McLanahan Jr. “He was a member of the firm of McLanahan and Burton, lawyers of Washington and was a director of the Union Trust Company of Washington. He died on October 29, 1918 in Baltimore, Maryland. Caroline Suydam Duer McLanahan was born on August 16, 1877 in New York City. Her mother was Louise Suydam Duer, and her father was Denning Duer. She had one sister, Louise Duer. She was married to George Xavier McLanahan. She had two children, Duer McLanahan and George Xavier McLanahan Jr. She died on May 18, 1933 in Geneva, Switzerland.
