Title:
Classical Seminary Princeton University
Description:
A bookplate featuring classical architecture with a plate of a woman on the front, with text on the top of the architecture that reads “Anasson Phoebe Paranasou te Kranan Kastilian Fileon” translated from Greek to English. One of the names in the translation is Kastila who was “the Naiad Nymph of the prophetic of the Oracle of Delphi in Phokis.” It is believed that her waters came from Aitolian river Achelous which was part of the Phokian river Ceciphus. They first emerged on the upper slopes of Mount Parnassos in the form of the spring Kassotis before sinking into the ground to reappear as the Spring Kastilla beside the seat of the Delphic oracle. The nature of these two springs - which were sewn together - explains the name, which was apparently derived from the Greek word kassou, meaning “to sew.” Kastilla was connected to Daphins, an early prophetic nymph of the oracle, the Korykiai nymphs of the sacred Delphic cave, and Thyia, a local nymph loved by the god Apollon.
