Description:
A bookplate made in memory of Charles Richard Williams. On the top of the bookplate, there is a picture of a man, presumably Charles Richard Williams. There is garland surrounding the picture. On the bottom of the picture there are stacks of books and a lamp that is glowing. There is also a crest on the bottom with a book on it. There is text on the book that reads “Det Nov Testamentum” which possibly translates to “Give the New Testimony.” There is also text below the crest that reads “Dei Sub Numine Viget” which translates to “Thrives under the inspiration of god.” Charles Richard Williams was born in 1853. He graduated from Princeton University in 1875. “He was an author and editor of the Indianapolis News from 1892 to 1911. He was also a writer and poet. He died in 1927. Bookplate creator William Edgar Fisher was born in Wellsville, N.Y. on October 24, 1872. He attended Phillips, Andover Academy, and Cornell University. He was a well known artist, advertiser, and bookplate designer and was a former president of the American Book Plate Society. He became an art editor of Judge magazine during the early 1920s. Additionally, Fisher was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Players of New York City. He died at the age of 84 in 1956. There is a literary journal published on Jstor called the Novum Testamentum, which is a journal that devotes its study to the New Testament and its related subjects. This highlights that the terminology is still utilized regarding the New Testament today.
