Title:
Richardson, PVRSVE VIRTVE
Description:
A bookplate with the name Richardson. The text Pvrsve Virtve, meaning “Pursue Virtue,” is surrounded by a heart.” Bookplate creator Charles Francis Richardson was born on May 29, 1851 in Hallowell, Maine. His parents were Charles Richardson and Mary Savory (Wingate) Richardson. He got married to Elizabeth Miner Thomas on April 12, 1878. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated in 1871. During his life, he was an educator, poet, and literature historian. He was also a literary editor for the New York Independent, the Philadelphia Sunday School Times, and Good Literature. He became the Winckley Chair of Anglo-Saxon and English at Dartmouth. He worked at Dartmouth until he retired in 1910. His works include A Primer of American Literature, The College Book, and The Cross. Richardson died on October 8, 1913 in Lisbon, New Hampshire.
