Title:
Edward G. Miner Fund, The University of Rochester Library
Description:
A bookplate for the University of Rochester Library depicting a ship sailing. Next to the text “Edward G. Miner Fund'' there is a stack of books on the left, and a globe on the right. Bookplate collector, glassmaker, and trustee Edward Griffith Miner was born on December 19, 1863 in Waverly, Illinois. He moved from Illinois to Rochester, New York in 1883, “where he became secretary to the cousin who founded the company which Miner would be associated with for 48 years.” With more responsibility, he turned Pfaulder Company into a worldwide business and “the world’s largest manufacturer of glass-lined steel containers. Edward Miner was a trustee of the University of Rochester for more than four decades, and a chairman of the board of trustees for seven years.” He was a big part of the school’s library and he gave a lot to them, but he is more known for getting “several monographic and manuscript collections on the antiquarian market.” When the University of Rochester medical school opened in 1925, “His bibliographic interests'' were carried over to the School of Medicine’s library. He made friends with the Chairman of the Department of Anatomy, George Washington Corner. Being into history and the chairman of the library committee, Corner was excited to get people interested in a medical history collection, and is known for kickstarting the obscure compilation the library has in the present. In 1927, Corner inspired Miner to show the Medical Library ``41 titles of yellow fever, the first of many donations he would make to the collection until his death in 1955. In recognition of his services to the University of Rochester and its libraries, the medical library was named in honor of Edward G. Miner in December 1952. Bookplate creator William Edgar Fisher was born in Wellsville, N.Y. on October 24, 1872. He attended Phillips, Andover Academy, and Cornell University. He was a well known artist, advertiser, and bookplate designer and was a former president of the American Book Plate Society. He became an art editor of Judge magazine during the early 1920s. Additionally, Fisher was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Wars. He was also a member of the Players of New York City. He died at the age of 84 in 1956.
