Title:

From the Library of Senior Hall, Let There Be Light California 1868

Description:

A bookplate depicting a log cabin surrounded by trees. Below the cabin, there is text that reads “Senior Hall” with a mug, a pipe, and a stack of books next to it. Above the log cabin there is a shield with the text “Let there be light” and “California 1868” with the sun on it. “Senior Hall is a historic building on the University of California’s campus in Berkeley, California. It was designed by architect John Galen Howard. The building was proposed in 1903 and dedicated in 1906.” At first, it was their Student Union and was operated by the students who were seniors and men. The Order of the Golden Bear, “a senior honor society,” played a big part in the hall being built, and they hosted classified meetings after it was done being built. “According to the Daily Californian, Senior Hall was largely responsible for student-self governance at Berkeley, as the hall gave seniors a place to meet and discuss campus issues.” There was a second student union that disregarded it in 1923, “but the Order of the Golden Bear continues to meet there. Senior Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.”
