Description:
This is a bookplate that would have been purchased from the Torch Press Book Shop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It is a blank paper that would grant the purchaser the ability to paste it into their own book and there is a section that allows the purchaser to write the new location for where the book will be held. There are books above the bottom section of the paper. Luther Brewer was most known for huge collection of items involving Lehigh Hunt. He started the Torch Press in 1907 and caught the attention of the Republican Printing Company. They moved into a new building close to where they were before, and this is what allowed Luther Brewer to start the Torch Press book shop in 1809. It was known for selling pre-used and obscure books in-person and by mail. Author William Harvey Miner helped run the shop, and Brewer’s collection helped the store thrive. A few years later, it became on of the most popular bookstores west of Chicago. Another big part of it was its catalogs, “which collected and advertised a range of the store’s materials, from Abraham Lincoln ephemera to general literature. The Torch Press Book Shop was open in the same four-story building that The Torch Press Printing Company and Republican Printing Company until the store shut down in 1917. In the mid twenties, Brewer focused least on the Republican Printing Company, only being its vice president to focus on “book printing and collecting.”
