From the Collection: J. Michael Lennon’s collection of Norman Mailer’s Publication Research, 1948-2024, is arranged into eight series: Series I: Publications, 1948-2024; Series II: Speeches and Interviews, 1962-2006; Series III: Unpublished Works, c. 1945-2004; Series IV: Family and Peer Publications, 1978-2007; Series V: Correspondences, 1947-2007; Series VI: Norman Mailer’s Legacy, 1970-2023; Series VII: Personal papers and photographs, c. 1948-2011; and Series VIII: Objects, c. 1990s - c. 2005. Each series is further divided into corresponding subseries and subsubseries to aid in the research process.

The collection provides insight on Norman Mailer’s research and drafting process, publication history, and literary legacy spanning the arc of his career from 1948-2007, as well as posthumous acclaim up to 2024. The collection also provides insight on Mailer’s personal relationships both professionally and personally, along with the writing careers of family members and peers.

Subseries I: Provincetown, 1986-2009

Subseries I: Provincetown, 1986-2009, is arranged in chronological order of publication date and contains items related to Mailer’s time and legacy in Provincetown, Massachusetts. According to residency insight from J. Michael Lennon (see Series VI, Subseries II, Subsubseries IV, folder 77.1.), Mailer spent his summers in Provincetown from as early as the 1950s, before spending time year round at his Commercial Street home by 1996. As J. Michael Lennon wrote in Five Evocations of Provincetown from the Writings of Norman Mailer, Mailer had referred to P-town as “The Wild West of the East” and “the last democratic town in America.” Lennon also notes that “P-Town is where [Mailer] has spent 45 of the last 60 summers, and written all or part of three-fourths of his forty-odd books.” The materials in this subsubseries include, but are not limited to: Provincetown Arts Magazines from 1986-1998, a tribute from Mailer for Nat Halpern (c. 1983), draft typescript of “The Wild West of the East (Five Evocations of Provincetown from the Writing of Norman Mailer)” (published with Provincetown Arts Press, 2005); Blue Nights by George Hirose (with an introduction from Mailer, and posthumous tributes to Mailer in Provincetown Magazine and Provincetown Profiles, c. 2008-2009). The scope of materials in Subseries I: Provincetown, 1986-2009, includes original typescript (some with handwritten notes), and original periodical publication.
