From the Collection: J. Michael Lennon’s collection of Norman Mailer’s Publication Research, 1948-2024, is arranged into eight series: Series I: Publications, 1948-2024; Series II: Speeches and Interviews, 1962-2006; Series III: Unpublished Works, c. 1945-2004; Series IV: Family and Peer Publications, 1978-2007; Series V: Correspondences, 1947-2007; Series VI: Norman Mailer’s Legacy, 1970-2023; Series VII: Personal papers and photographs, c. 1948-2011; and Series VIII: Objects, c. 1990s - c. 2005. Each series is further divided into corresponding subseries and subsubseries to aid in the research process.

The collection provides insight on Norman Mailer’s research and drafting process, publication history, and literary legacy spanning the arc of his career from 1948-2007, as well as posthumous acclaim up to 2024. The collection also provides insight on Mailer’s personal relationships both professionally and personally, along with the writing careers of family members and peers.

Subsubseries II: Periodicals, 1975-2006

Subsubseries II: Periodicals, 1975-2006 is arranged in chronological order of publication date and contains periodical publication previously compiled in Mailer’s study. Some periodicals have personal connection or reference to Mailer, particularly those covering Harvard’s 350 year anniversary such as Life (“Old, Old Harvard: Living Its Traditions, America’s First College Celebrates 350 Years,” September 1986). Other periodicals and publications were inscribed to Mailer, such as “Snake’s Eye and Obsidian Knife: Art, Ideology, and ‘The Woman Who Rode Away’” by Peter Balbert (published in The D. H. Lawrence Review, 1985) or Forty Years of Playboy book signed by Hugh Heffner (published 1994). Lastly, this subsubseries includes periodicals of no particular theme or collection from publications such as Newsweek, The New York Times, Life, and the Boston Globe. The scope of materials includes original and copy book publication, and original periodical publications.

Within this series, folders 80.21.; 80.22.; 80.23. and 80.24. have been removed to Oversized Doc Box 2. Folders 80.26.; 80.27. 80.28 80.34.; 80.36.; 81.6. have been removed to Oversized Doc Box 3. The Forty Years of Playboy book is signed by Hugh Hefner and inscribed to Mailer with the note “Five decades of Memories with best wishes.”
