From the Collection: J. Michael Lennon’s collection of Norman Mailer’s Publication Research, 1948-2024, is arranged into eight series: Series I: Publications, 1948-2024; Series II: Speeches and Interviews, 1962-2006; Series III: Unpublished Works, c. 1945-2004; Series IV: Family and Peer Publications, 1978-2007; Series V: Correspondences, 1947-2007; Series VI: Norman Mailer’s Legacy, 1970-2023; Series VII: Personal papers and photographs, c. 1948-2011; and Series VIII: Objects, c. 1990s - c. 2005. Each series is further divided into corresponding subseries and subsubseries to aid in the research process.

The collection provides insight on Norman Mailer’s research and drafting process, publication history, and literary legacy spanning the arc of his career from 1948-2007, as well as posthumous acclaim up to 2024. The collection also provides insight on Mailer’s personal relationships both professionally and personally, along with the writing careers of family members and peers.

Subsubseries II: Literary Legacy, 1984-2011

Subsubseries II: Literary Legacy, 1984-2011, is arranged in chronological order and contains materials regarding Mailer’s travels, book catalogs, publication memorandums of agreements, and certificates relevant to his literary career. The scope of materials includes hand drawn and photographed portraits, pamphlets, posters, handwritten and typed notes, phone logs, photographs, periodical publications, and legal documents. Two of the travels within this subsubseries are from Mailer’s four Russia trips (trip dates: March and June 1984, February 1987, and fall 1992 to winter 1993), as well as his “Grand Tour” Paris and Germany folder for Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mailer” (c. 1992), both including correspondences and itinerary. The subsubseries also includes memorandums of agreement regarding work outside of Mailer’s publications, such as a screenplay adaptation from Mailer, John Buffalo Mailer and Peter Alson for Alson’s book, “Confessions of an Ivy League Bookie” (January 2002). Lastly, this subsubseries includes Mailer’s Literary Will (discussed and drafted: November 26, 2003; signed by Mailer and witnesses December 22, 2003), along with his publication status as of 2005/2006. The materials extend to posthumous impact with book checkout lists from 2010-2011.

Within the series, folder 82.20. has been removed to Oversized Doc Box 2.
