Description:

This is a notice for a meeting at Obadiah Gore’s house in Kingstown on July 27, 1773. For more context of this time period, during a meeting held on June 2 1773, the inhabitants of Connecticut met at Hartford and adopted a code of rules and laws for the government of the Susquehanna colony. They decided that three distinguished men from each colony would be appointed as directors and meet every three months to manage local affairs, suppress vice and preserve the peace of God and the King; provided for a general town meeting,to hear complaints and settle disputes. Obadiah Gore, Parshall Terry and Nathan Denison were all appointed directors representing Kingston.

These are to Warn all the Inhabitance [sic] of Kingstown Who are proper voters to meet att [sic] the House of Obadiah Gore in Kingstown Aforsaide on Tuesday the 27th Day of July Instant att [sic] 4 oClock in the Afternoon on sd [sic] [said] Day 1st to Choose one or more Letters for this town 2ly to Sign the Articles of Agreement as voted by the Generall meeting (if Any these be that have Not yet Signed) 3ly to Do Any other Business that shall be thought Necessary for the Benefit of sd [sic] [said] Town Dated in Kingstown Obadiah Gore } Town July 24th 1773 Parshal Terry } Comtee Nathan Deneson }
