Description:

This letter orders Henry Jackson to march to Bedford with the regiment under his command. Henry Jackson began as a colonel in the Continental Army and was commander of Jackson’s Additional Continental Regiment.He later moved up to General and lived the rest of his life after war helping Henry Knox with business affairs. Jonathan Sullivan was a General under Washington’s command when this letter was written. Sullivan had a long military career during the revolutionary war, winning several key battles during the war and was later a delegate in the Continental Congress, and among those signing the Continental Association.

Head Quarters Providence 6th Sept 1778 Sir You will march to Bedford with the Detachment under your command in order to oppose the Enemy who have landed there and assist in drawing them from their Posts, you will likewise give the earliest intelligence of every material occurrence that come within your knowledge to make that I may be enabled to act accordingly. You will endeavor to assist the militia who lay in your Rout and take such Command of them as your Rank in the Continental Army entitles you to.
