Description:

The manuscript dated March 23, 1782, depicts a testimony and general receipt by Elisha Satterlee and others regarding a debt of dues by Matthew Hollenbach. In the note, Satterlee and the others note that they have received the sum of money that was previously lost due to the depreciation of the currency printed. This payment covered a period of service the men conducted between January 1, 1777 to January 1, 1781. The language seems to allude to the dues being related to military service, as the men note that their service was conducted by a term, which they performed Severly and Fairly. The others signed with Elisha Satterlee’s name include Isaac Smith, Ambrose Gaylord, Rufus Bennet, Israel Harding, John O’Neal, Nathaniel West, and John Cary. These men have each drawn a seal next to their names. The manuscript was witnessed in the presence of Azel Hyde and Major Alden.
