Description:
This certificate specifies that Samuel McClintock is the owner of one share of the stock for the Centre Turnpike Road. As the population was increasing in Sudbury during the early 19th century, Northumberland County needed to make progress in a better transportation system. In 1805 the Pennsylvania Legislature voted to incorporate the Centre Turnpike Co. The Centre Turnpike connected Sunbury to Reading and became a major highway. Joseph Preistly was a prominent lawyer of Northumberland who was appointed to take subscription of stock in the company and served as the organization's president. John Cowden was a merchant and first postmaster of Northumberland, the county;s first post office and also had a share in the stock. Samuel Mcclintstock was among the several other stockholders who were from Hamburg, Lycoming County, Philadelphia, and Reading. It took 7 years for the Turnpike to be completed and had cost an estimated $1200 to $3500 per mile. To read more about the Centre Turnpike see here.
