Description:

This letter is written by Eliphalet Follet Jr. to the Committee of the Wyoming Claim in regards to his father, Eliphalet Follet Sr., death that occurred during the Wyoming Massacre on July 3rd 1778. Follet Sr. was a part of a group of patriots who were slaughtered by the Indians and Tories. His wife, Elizabeth Dewey, fled from wyoming with her 6 children, giving birth to Follet’s last son in 1778, that she would name Eliphalet in her husbands honor. Dewey was known for her courage and ability to push through the many obstacles thrown her way after her husband's death.Dewey traveled miles on horse with her six children, while being pregnant with Elihpalet Jr., to Sullivans camp for refugees.Also, sustaining a broken arm.In this letter Follet Jr. sends the names of the surviving heirs of his father. Only Himself and his sister Elizabeth Reynolds survived past childhood and into their adult years, with many of their siblings dying of sickness at early age.

To the Committee of the Wyoming Claim

Gentlemen According to request I send you the names of the surviving heirs of my father, who was one of the Wyoming Sufferers. My father, Eliphalet Follett, lived on Kingston side, near Forty Fort. He owned a lot where he lived and other lands adjacent or, in the neighborhood, in all, to the account of six hundred acres. He had seven children, six sons and one daughter- they are all dead but myself and sister- my sister’s name is Elizabeth Reynolds- She lives in Cambridge, Franklin County, Vermont, and I live at York Cross Roads, Sandusky County, Ohio. My father was killed in the battle fought at Wyoming July 3rd 1778, and my mother, with a family of seven small children, after suffering great incredible hardships, succeeded in reaching her pursuit to Vermont. All that was my father’s was utterly lost to his widow, or heirs, they never having recovered any thing for his possessions. I live neighbor to Issac Slocum of York, Sandusky Co. O. who is one of the first of Wyoming settlers and with whom I am well acquainted. Eliphalet Follett York Cross Roads Jany. 12th 1838
