Description:

The following item depicts a letter by John Butler, the British loyalist, to an unknown recipient. In the letter, Butler is asking the recipient to give the bearer a cotton hat and charge it to his account. Though the letter was originally collected because it was thought to be Zebulon Butler’s brother, John Butler, further research led us to understand that it is actually the loyalist John Butler. This is due to the location of the letter, Butlesbury, the homestead of John Butler’s father, Walter Butler, as well as an annotated caption on the back of the item that labels the creator the “barbarous colonel Butler.” This figure is most well known for his command of forces during the Battle of Wyoming, which was a military engagement during the American Revolutionary War between Patriot militia and a force of loyalist soldiers and Iroquois warriors. It took place in July 1778 in what is known now as Luzerne County.
