Description:

This is a receipt from John Cadwalader to Daniel Lord, the treasurer of the Lawyer’s War Fund (also known as the Lawyer’s Fund) for $50.00 on May 24, 1861. The letter is to be about governmental funding for war. Cadwalader, born in Philadelphia in 1805, was an American jurist, politician, lawyer, U.S. district judge, and even served as a United States representative from Pennsylvania. The Lawyer’s Fund was established on April 22, 1861 in New York, with Daniel Lord as treasurer. Lord was the custodian of $27,000.00 for the relief of families of volunteers in the war. These funds were donated by members of the bar and bench, and it is likely that this receipt is in reference to a donation to this fund. Cadwalader attended the University of Pennsylvania where he obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree.
