Description:

This is a letter from John Caldwell Calhoun to J. H. Hodges on July 30, 1849. In the letter, Calhoun encloses something for the recipient, presumably either an engraving or some other identifiable information in regards to a cousin, John Ewing Colhoun, who was a South Carolina lawyer and member of the United States senate until his death in 1802. John C. Calhoun was born in 1782 and was an American statesman and political theorist. Calhoun attended Yale College and Litchfield Law School which helped him secure positions in Congress and the White House.

Fort Hill 30th July 1849 Sir, I return the enclosed. The writer was an eminent lawyer. He died, when a member of the senate of the United States, in 1802. He was my cousin. Respectfully J. C. Calhoun Mr. J. H. Hodges
