Description:
This is a letter from Roscoe Conkling to Hendrick Wright on January 10, 1877. A thank you or courtesy letter for what seems to be in relation to the bill establishing the Electoral Commission of 1877. Conkling played a major role in resolving the disputed election between Samuel Tilden and Rutherford Hayes. The creator of this letter, Roscoe Conkling, was born in New York in 1829. This American politician and lawyer led opposition to civil service reform. Conkling actually turned down two presidential appointments to the United States Supreme Court. The recipient of this letter, H[endrick] B[radley] Wright, was born in Plymouth, Pennsylvania in 1808. Wright would go on to study law and serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Later in his life he voiced his opinion on labor concerns and in 1871 Wright wrote a book on it.
