Description:
This is a letter from George Mifflin Dallas to Peter James Trask Woodbury on October 4, 1861. This letter is about Dallas going to the Court Martial in New York so he could testify in the case of Commander Overton Carr. Later in the letter he says unfortunately he can not make it on the day they want him to testify on, he hopes they can give him a day sometime next week. During the year this letter was written Dallas was to retire from public office. The creator of this letter, George Dallas, was born in Pennsylvania in 1792. He is best known for serving as vice president of the United States from 1845 to 1849. Dallas was a mayor in Philadelphia, U.S. minister to the United Kingdom, and was even elected to the American Philosophical Society.

Sir
I received through the post, late this afternoon, your subpoena to attend at the Naval General Court Martial at the Navy Yard New- York, on the 5.’[th] instant (tomorrow) at 10’/2 a.m. to testify in the case of Commander Overton Carr.
It is, of course, beyond my power to reach the court at the time you have appointed: and though utterly at a loss to imagine in what manner I can possibly be of use to the prosecution or the defense, I am anxious to manifest the respect due to your summons; and must, therefore, beg that, should my presence be esteemed necessary, you will be good enough to designate some day during the next week and to let me be apprised of it in time.
