Description:

This is a letter from William Heathcote DeLancey to Dr. Sartwell on October 25, 1852. DeLancey is offering to give the recipient needed supplies for Sartwell’s church, as DeLancy was a High Churchman and bishop for the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York. Some time in 1852, DeLancy received a Doctor of Civil Laws from Oxford, as well as being a delegate to the English House of Bishops. The recipient, Dr. Henry Parker Sartwell, was born in Massachusetts in 1792. Dr. Sartwell received his Ph. D. from Hamilton College. Early on he was a surgeon in the United States army and later became a physician-botanist. Sartwell was also from New York like DeLancey, which is likely to have brought the two together and resulted in this letter concerning church.

Transcription:

Geneva Oct 25/52 My dear Sartwell I write to ask if you are provided with a classman to alleviate in sending next. If not I can send the new Mr Park to fill your pulpit. There are so many vacant parishes at present that if you are supplied I need his services everywhere. Plan to drop me a line at once. I pray God to bless you. I remain sincerely Yours W H DeLancey Dr Sartwell P.S. Bishop of Diocese of Western NY
