Description:

This is a letter from John Watson Foster to someone who is unknown on August 18, 1892. The letter seemed to be about Foster coming to the recipient’s house. They arrange for transportation to Ashney Park. Two months before this letter was written, Foster served as a State Department "trouble shooter" before becoming Secretary of State for the final six months of Harrison's term. He officially became Secretary of State in June of 1892. The creator of this letter, John Foster, was born in Indiana in 1836. Foster was a journalist, lawyer, diplomat, and military officer. He also served as U.S. Secretary of State and was the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Russia, and Spain.

Personal Aug. 18. 92 My dear sir, We expect to stop with Mr. N. H. Painter, who has a cottage at West End. He will doubtless arrange to have us driven now to Asheny Park. Please advise me at his house the home of the meeting which I am to attend. Very truly John W. Foster
