Greeley was a candidate of the new Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant. The creator of this letter, Horace Greeley, was born in New Hampshire in 1811. Greeley was a newspaper publisher and editor, while also having served in the U.S. House of Representatives. The recipient of this letter, H[endrick] B[radley] Wright, was born in Pennsylvania in 1808. Wright would go on to study law and serve in the U.S. House of Representatives. Later in his life he voiced his opinion on labor concerns and in 1871 Wright wrote a book on it.
