Description:
This is a letter from J.G. Holland to Silas Durand on September 30, 1865. Holland is coming to New York/Wilkes-Barre and informs Durand of the day and the place they are to meet. Holland can reschedule, but notes difficulty in his schedule and where he will be to meet Durand, potentially pushing the meeting back to February of 1866. Silas Durand, was born in Pennsylvania in 1833. Durand spent much of his early life on his father’s farm, as time went on he decided he wanted to study law which is what he did for the rest of his career. However, he closed his legal work in 1865 and began work in ministry. Durand traveled around the churches as an evangelist for years, beginning in November 1865, eventually working at a church in Southampton, PA. Holland is likely writing to make sure he can meet Durand before he begins his travels. Holland is said to be the “most successful man of letters in the United States,” an early author in American realism, and consistent newspaper editor and biographer (most famously for the first biography of President Abraham Lincoln). At the time of this letter, Holland was temporary editor-in-chief for the Springfield Republican. However, Holland’s biography of Lincoln was published in February of that year, which was a bestseller. Holland was likely traveling because of the success of said book, making meeting with Durand difficult for timing and location.

Silas H Durand Esq
Dear sir:-
I am to
be at New York on the 29th of
November, and it would be con-
venient for me to be in Wilkes
Barre on the 19th. If you want
a day later than this, I hardly know
when I can place you, but do not
doubt that I can get a day
for you before the close of February.
Thy terms, if I have no other certain
to deliver on the way, will be
$50 and expenses from New York
and back. If Scranton or any
town on the way should want
me at the same time, I pay my own
expenses. Subject: “The National
Heart” Yours truly, J.G. Holland
