Description:

This is a photocopy of a letter from J.W. Masone to Walter Hilliard on December 12, 1846. This letter is regarding finding information about people who haven’t paid for their subscription to Eclectic Magazine, Mrs. Martha Dwight Sturdevant and Luther Kidder. The note mentions that their accounts have lapsed possibly because no one has called on them yet. The recipient of this letter, Walter Bidwell, was born in Connecticut in 1798. Bidwell became a prominent magazine editor for many different magazines. Luther Kidder was born in Waterford, Connecticut on November 19, 1808. The family moved to Wilkes Barre, current day Kidder Township, Carbon County, where Kidder read and studied law. He graduated from Dickinson college, receiving an honorary Master of Arts degree in 1842. He was elected to the Pennsylvania senate in 1842 and later the president judge of Carbon County in 1847.
