Description:

This is a letter from Samuel Southard, William Bainbridge, and Alexander J. Dallas to various officers on September 18, 1827. This letter seems to contain military orders in which they are required to move into Philadelphia. One of the creators of this letter, Samuel Southard, was born in New Jersey in 1787. At the time of this letter, Southard was serving as the secretary of the Navy, and is said to be one of the Navy’s most successful early secretaries. Southard notes that the recipient should report to Lieutenant David Geisinger, who was responsible for receiving ships in Pennsylvania. Alexander Dallas was a midshipman in the Navy at the time of the letter.
