Description:
This is a letter from Horatio Southgate to Mrs. Bowen on March 10, 1864. During this letter Southgate is replying to Bowen’s request for photos in which it sounds like Southgate cannot fulfill the request. The creator of this letter, Horatio Southgate, was born in Maine in 1812. Southgate studied at Columbia University where he received his Doctorate of Divinity degree and became a missionary bishop, traveling to many places. At the time of the letter, Southgate served as a rector of Zion church in New York City, New York. In the letter, the unknown Mrs. Bowen asked Southgate for a photograph, which he unfortunately declines as he does not have any.
Transcription:
63, West 37th Street,
New York, March 10. 1864.
Dear Madam,
In reply to your request for Photographs, in your note of the 20, I beg to say that I have none, and regret that I cannot gratify you in a matter where the object is so useful & laudable.
I am, very respectfully,
Yours,
Horatio Southgate.
Mrs. Bowen.
