Description:
This is a letter from John Stockton to L. J. List on May 23, 1864. The letter informs the recipient about a package being sent. The creator of this letter, John Stackton, was born in 1813 and he was a minister, composer, musician, and hymn writer. Stockton wrote and published two gospel song books. Within this letter, Stockton is writing to the Chairman of the Autograph Commission, under the Sanitary Fair. During the Civil War era, the Sanitary Fair(s) aimed to promote patriotism and support Union soldiers. These fairs also raised funds for the United States Sanitary Commission, a civilian run organization which provided for soldier’s health (mental and physical health, along with other modes of assisting soldiers). Stockton is sending this letter to L.J. Cist, also known as Lewis Jacob Cist, the Chairman of the Autograph Commission, Cist was a Civil War era author and autograph collector. Other collections including letters to him show that he requested signatures for the benefit of numerous sanitary fairs both in and outside of Pennsylvania. In a letter from President Abraham Lincoln, he notes that Cist requested a signature to benefit the Mississippi Valley Sanitary Fair.
