Description:

This is a letter from Gideon Welles to P. J. Woodbury on October 28, 1861. This letter seems to be about a meeting of a military board in Brooklyn. The creator of this letter, Gideon Welles (aka Father Neptune) was born in Connecticut in 1802. Welles was a veteran, serving as Secretary of the U.S. Navy for eight years, and held strong anti-slavery beliefs. There is a brief biography on Peter James Trask Woodbury, in the History of Bedford, New Hampshire, 1737, by the town. It explains that Woodbury was born to Martha Riddle and Peter Woodbury on May 8, 1820. He attended Dartmouth University, graduating in 1839 when he was admitted to the Bar in Troy, New York. In 1858, he was appointed the Judge Advocate General of the Navy, a position being offered to him in this manuscript within our collection. He served many years with the president, Chester A. Arthur.
