This is a letter from Thomas Wharton Jr. of the Council of Safety to General Israel Putnan on January 22, 1777. During this letter Wharton is requesting more troops because their mission seems to be to protect someone. The creator of this letter, Thomas Wharton Jr., was born in Pennsylvania in 1735. Following the Declaration of Independence, Wharton Jr. was the first governor of Pennsylvania. As time went on, he became a member of the American Philosophical Society. The Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia has a brief history of Thomas Savadge’s Pennsylvania Salt Works, with a connection to Thomas Wharton’s involvement with Savadge. Internet Archive has additional history on the connection between Salt Making, Savadge, and Wharton.
