Description:

This is an envelope sent from Levi Woodbury to Peter James Trask Woodbury on March 10, 1845. This envelope more than likely would have carried a letter. The creator of this envelope, Levi Woodbury, was born in New Hampshire in 1789. Woodbury was a jurist, attorney, and politician. He served on the United States Supreme Court, served as governor of New Hampshire, and was a Senator. There is a brief biography on Peter James Trask Woodbury, in the History of Bedford, New Hampshire, 1737, by the town. It explains that Woodbury was born to Martha Riddle and Peter Woodbury on May 8, 1820. He attended Dartmouth University, graduating in 1839 when he was admitted to the Bar in Troy, New York. In 1858, he was appointed the Judge Advocate General of the Navy. He served many years with the president, Chester A. Arthur.
